Sunday Night Football Flex Scheduling Watch: Week 12

Since it started in its current format as the NFL’s main primetime package in 2006, the defining feature of NBC’s Sunday Night Football has been the use of flexible scheduling to ensure the best matchups and showcase the best teams as the season goes along. Well, that’s the theory, anyway; the reality has not always lived up to the initial hype and has at times seemed downright mystifying. Regardless, I’m here to help you figure out what you can and can’t expect to see on Sunday nights on NBC.

A full explanation of all the factors that go into flexible scheduling decisions can be found on my NFL Flexible Scheduling Primer, but here’s the Cliffs Notes version with all the important points you need to know:

  • The season can be broken down into three different periods (four if you count the first four weeks where flexible scheduling does not apply at all) for flexible scheduling purposes, each with similar yet different rules governing them: the early flex period, from weeks 5 to 10; the main flex period, from weeks 11 to 17; and week 18. In years where Christmas forces either the Sunday afternoon slate or the Sunday night game to Saturday in Week 16, flex scheduling does not apply that week, and the main flex period begins week 10.
  • In all cases, only games scheduled for Sunday may be moved to Sunday night. Thursday and Monday night games are not affected by Sunday night flexible scheduling (discounting the “flexible scheduling” applied to Saturdays in December in recent years – see below).
  • During the early and main flex periods, one game is “tentatively” scheduled for Sunday night and listed with the Sunday night start time of 8:20 PM ET. This game will usually remain at that start time and air on NBC, but may be flexed out for another game and moved to 1, 4:05, or 4:25 PM ET on Fox or CBS, no less than 12 days in advance of the game.
  • No more than two games can be flexed to Sunday night over the course of the early flex period. If the NFL wishes to flex out a game in the early flex period twelve days in advance, CBS and Fox may elect to protect one game each from being moved to Sunday night. This is generally an emergency valve in situations where the value of the tentative game has plummeted since the schedule was announced, namely in cases of injury to a key star player.
  • CBS and Fox may also each protect games, historically in five out of six weeks of the main flex period (whether or not they received an additional protection with the expansion of the main flex period an additional week is unknown), but all of those protections must be submitted after week 5, week 4 in years where the main flex period begins week 10 (so it is always six weeks before the start of the main flex period).
  • No team may appear more than six times across the league’s three primetime packages on NBC, ESPN, and Fox/NFL Network, and only three teams are allowed to appear that often, with everyone else getting five. In addition, no team may appear more than four times on NBC. All teams’ number of appearances heading into this season may be seen here.
  • According to the league’s official page, teams are notified when “they are no longer under consideration or eligible for a move to Sunday night.” However, they rarely make this known to the fans, and the list of each network’s protections has never officially been made public. It used to leak fairly regularly, but has not leaked since 2014.
  • In all cases, the NFL is the ultimate arbiter of the schedule and consults with CBS, Fox, and NBC before moving any games to prime time. If the NFL does elect to flex out the Sunday night game, the network whose game is flexed in may receive the former tentative game, regardless of which network would “normally” air it under the “CBS=AFC, Fox=NFC” rules, keeping each network’s total number of games constant. At the same time, the NFL may also move games between 1 PM ET and 4:05/4:25 PM ET. However, this feature focuses primarily if not entirely on Sunday night flexible scheduling.
  • In Week 18, the entire schedule is set on only six days notice, ensuring that NBC gets a game with playoff implications, generally a game where the winner is the division champion. More rarely, NBC may also show an intra-division game for a wild card spot, or a game where only one team wins the division with a win but doesn’t win the division with a loss, but such situations are rare and 2018 and 2020, respectively, were the first times it showed such games. If no game is guaranteed to have maximum playoff implications before Sunday night in this fashion, the league has been known not to schedule a Sunday night game at all. To ensure maximum flexibility, no protections or appearance limits apply to Week 17. The NFL also arranges the rest of the schedule such that no team playing at 4:25 PM ET (there are no 4:05 games Week 17) could have their playoff fate decided by the outcome of the 1 PM ET games, which usually means most if not all of the games with playoff implications outside Sunday night are played at 4:25 PM ET. However, beginning this season, the NFL will also move two games to Saturday to be simulcast on ESPN and ABC.

Here are the current tentatively-scheduled games and my predictions:

Week 11 (November 21):

  • Selected game: Pittsburgh @ LA Chargers.

Week 12 (November 28):

  • Selected game: Cleveland @ Baltimore.

Week 13 (December 5):

  • Selected game: Denver @ Kansas City.

Week 14 (December 12):

  • Selected game: Chicago @ Green Bay. I predicted Niners-Bengals would be flexed in, but I’m not as surprised by this as I was last week as I could have very easily picked this game to keep its spot. What does surprise me is that the league moved Niners-Bengals into the late afternoon window even though there’s no reason to back off of Bills-Bucs as CBS’ main late game, but as I mentioned in the Last-Minute Remarks post CBS had an embarrassment of riches in the early window so it’s not clear the distribution would be too much worse.

Week 15 (December 19):

  • Tentative game: New Orleans @ Tampa Bay
  • Prospects: 5-6 v. 8-3 with the Saints now not only out of the playoffs but tied for second in the division with the Falcons, and the prospect of the Bucs pulling away with the division. But the Saints are actually only out of the playoffs on tiebreakers; it seems like any NFC team wouldn’t have much reason to be flexed out at the moment, except the Lions and maybe Seahawks.
  • Likely protections: Bengals-Broncos if anything (CBS) and Packers-Ravens or Seahawks-Rams (FOX).
  • Other possible games: As usual, assuming the games set aside for a potential move to Saturday can’t be protected. If Packers-Ravens is protected, Bengals-Broncos is the best game on the slate followed by Titans-Steelers, with Falcons-Niners also lurking about. Incredibly, RedHogs-Eagles, originally a game reserved for a potential move to Saturday that never really seemed like it was seriously in the running, may now be as much of a candidate for a Sunday night move as Panthers-Bills, which was more competitive for a Saturday move.
  • Analysis: The NFL announced Packers-Ravens would be moved to the late window to become Fox’s new feature game, so I’m going to assume if it wasn’t protected it either is now or effectively is. Frankly even if it wasn’t protected Saints-Bucs might well become the new feature game making a flex pointless. If Bengals-Broncos was protected the best option in terms of records is a game where the better team is a half-game worse than the tentative and the worse team is a half-game better, which makes it less lopsided but not very compelling. Would a game that’s 5-7 v. 8-4 or 9-3 be flexed out for a game that’s 6-4 v. 6-5-1, particularly when one of the teams involved in the potential replacement doesn’t have much name value? Probably not. 8-4 v. 7-5 would be more difficult to ignore, but it still feels like Tom Brady has more name value in his little finger than the Bengals and Broncos have on their entire teams, Joe Burrow aside. If 6-5 v. 7-4 couldn’t unseat 4-7 v. 9-3, I have a hard time seeing a flex here; the Saints aren’t nearly as compelling without Drew Brees, but the Broncos also don’t have anywhere near the market or star power of the Niners, and even if it seems like the Saints are in complete freefall without Jameis Winston, they’ll be at worst a game out of the playoffs when the decision is made. If the Bucs beat the Falcons there’s a chance they’ll have the division sewn up by the time the game is played, so the league might end up having to think long and hard about a flex, but they’ll still have to fight for seeding and even in the worst-case scenario the Saints should have at least an outside shot at a playoff spot, and the alternatives just aren’t compelling enough for me to go with them.
  • Final prediction: New Orleans Saints @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers (no change).

Week 16 (December 26):

  • Tentative game: Washington @ Dallas
  • Prospects: 5-6 v. 7-4. The Cowboys have escaped last season’s NFC East mediocrity, while Washington is now second place in the division and in position to potentially receive a wild card, only two games behind the Cowboys. The only way this likely gets flexed out is if the Cowboys could have the division on lockdown and have their seed locked in, and since this is now the third-to-last week of the season, that’s not likely.
  • Likely protections: Ravens-Bengals, Bills-Patriots, Steelers-Chiefs, Broncos-Raiders, or nothing (CBS) and Bucs-Panthers, Bears-Seahawks, or nothing (FOX).
  • Other possible games: I listed four protection options for CBS this week and somehow all four currently pit two teams at or above .500, with Rams-Vikings not too far behind. Bucs-Panthers is a dark horse.

Week 17 (January 2):

  • Tentative game: Minnesota @ Green Bay
  • Prospects: 5-6 v. 9-3. The Vikings are still only out of the playoffs on tiebreakers, but the matchup is now another game more lopsided, and given the quality of the alternatives it might be difficult for this game to defend its spot. If the Packers don’t have anything to play for (though they’re still in a fight for the first-round bye) this still might be a cinch to be flexed out.
  • Likely protections: Chiefs-Bengals or Broncos-Chargers (CBS) and Rams-Ravens or Cardinals-Cowboys (FOX).
  • Other possible games: Chiefs-Bengals and Fox’s potentially protected games all involve only teams at 7-4 or better, which is probably the point where you can start thinking about overcoming the tentative game bias. Broncos-Chargers and Raiders-Colts are lagging behind, with Falcons-Bills saved by the NFC’s mediocrity, and Panthers-Saints and Eagles-Presidents as dark horses.

Week 18 (January 9):

  • Tentative game: None (NBC will show game with guaranteed playoff implications).
  • Games to watch: Pretty much every NFC game except Packers-Lions lol; even Seahawks-Cardinals could come into play if the Niners and Rams are keeping it close enough for the division. On the AFC side, only the AFC South games are truly out of the running at the moment; the North and West are tightly packed and the East games could see whichever team is in wild card position facing a “win and in, lose and the winner of another game knocks you out” scenario.

16 thoughts on “Sunday Night Football Flex Scheduling Watch: Week 12

  1. For Week 17, I think the most likely scenario is Rams-Ravens stays as America’s Game of the Week on Fox, Cardinals-Cowboys gets flexed to SNF, Vikings-Packers becomes Fox’s main early game, and Chiefs-Bengals becomes CBS’s main game in the 1pm window. I could also see them putting Rams-Ravens at 1pm on Fox, Cardinal-Cowboys at 4:25pm on Fox, and keeping Vikings-Packers on NBC, if the Vikings go on a hot streak. I don’t see Washington-Cowboys week 16 SNF being flexed now, as the game is not as lopsided and Washington will, at worse, be in the Wildcard conversation, if not alive for the NFC East title. the Week 16 CBS DH game is currently Steelers-Chiefs; but if the Steelers continue to lose, I could see that game being moved to 1pm, and Bills-Patriots being moved to the DH game.

  2. John:

WAS-DAL is almost certain to stay in Week 16 at this point given the Football Team actually is the #7 seed. I’m surprised they already announced no flexes in Week 15 given I could have seen a scenario where if the Football Team and Eagles both won next week, that game got flexed to SNF since the Eagles (with a bye in Week 14) would be 6-7 and the Football Team would also be no worse than 6-7 and that could by then have them tied for the 7 seed (Football Team would have the division tie-breaker).

Also still think as of now ESPN/ABC could get BOTH NFC East games in Week 18 (Football Team-Giants at 4:30, Cowboys-Eagles at 8:15) if both games matter towards the playoffs, though the one thing that could block it is that would force The Meadowlands Racetrack (on the grounds of MetLife Stadium) to have to give up a Saturday night of racing due to parking issues in The Meadowlands (this happened in January 2003 when the Jets hosted a Saturday playoff game and The Meadowlands during the racing season saw two purse cuts to Harness Horsemen, who I think remember that and would likely take the NFL to court if they tried to put Football Team-Giants on Saturday remembering what happened in 2003).

  3. John:

Actually, what could wind up happening in Week 16 is:

Steelers-Chiefs is moved to 1:00 PM on CBS
Football Team-Cowboys is moved to 4:25 PM on CBS
Bills-Patriots is moved to 8:20 on NBC

While normally I would not see that, this is a particular case where CBS might actually prefer Football Team-Cowboys at 4:25 and would give up Bills-Pats because Washington-Dallas is a rivalry that has special meaning to CBS dating back to when they had the NFC package dating back to when CBS first got the NFL in 1960. Washington-Dallas was at different times when CBS had the NFL/NFC the league’s biggest rivalry and it would likely mean a lot to people at CBS to get that rivalry one more time, giving up Bills-Pats to do it.

  4. Here’s my take on things so far. (Reposted from previous thread)

    Week 14

    # 1 – Bills(7-4) @ Buccaneers(8-3) <—if not protected, this is what I'd go with, but I am sure it's protected by CBS
    # 2 – 49ers(6-5) @ Bengals(7-4) <—I agree with Morgan and think this will be flexed in and I have no idea where Walt gets his information about security in Cincy
    # 3 – Raiders(6-5) @ Chiefs(7-4) <—this game can't go to SNF, as KC is out of options for SNF until Week 18
    # 4 – Ravens(8-3) @ Browns(6-6) <—was already a pretty good SNF game last night, but it won't be chosen again

Tentative – Bears(4-7) @ Packers(9-3) – looking like my Pack could lose this SNF game at home due the Bears and it's a shame if the NFL keeps this. Due to Chicago being such a big market, it's possible, but shouldn't be

    Week 15

    # 1 – Packers(9-3) @ Ravens(8-3) <—I bet FOX has this protected
    # 2 – Bengals(7-4) @ Broncos(6-5)
    # 3 – Titans(8-4) @ Steelers(5-5-1)

Tentative – Saints(5-6) @ Buccaneers(8-3) – might still be the game that stays due to protections, but we'll see

    Week 16

    # 1 – Ravens(8-3) @ Bengals(7-4) <—huge game after Bengals smacked Ravens earlier this season in Baltimore
    # 2 – Bills(7-4) @ Patriots(8-4) <—huge rematch after the 1st matchup is this coming Monday
    # 3 – Broncos(6-5) @ Raiders(6-5) <—potentially pretty important
    # 4 – Steelers(5-5-1) @ Chiefs(7-4) <—can't be flexed in as KC is out of SNF until Week 18

Tentative – Redskins(5-6) @ Cowboys(7-4) – unless this game is a total mismatch and a much better alternative game is found, this stays put. And after Week 12, it's now looking likely to stay put.

    Week 17

Tentative – Vikings(5-6) @ Packers(9-3) – if Vikings don't just fall of the earth, this will stay. That being said, there are some other compelling matchups in Week 17.

Week 18 (sounds so weird to say that)

2 games will be moved from their preliminary Sunday slot to Sat. 01/08/22 and they’ll both be aired on ESPN/ABC. This is an interesting move to me. These 2 games and the SNF game will both be announced with the rest of the Week 18 schedule, at the conclusion of the Week 17 schedule (at the latest).

    Tentative – none of course

Current Games and Records of each team

    Jets(3-8) @ Bills(7-4)
    Patriots(8-4) @ Dolphins(5-7) – if the Dolphins keep winning??????
    Steelers(5-5-1) @ Ravens(8-3) – fading due to Steelers
    Bengals(7-4) @ Browns(6-6) – I don't know
    Titans(8-4) @ Texans(2-9)
    Colts(6-6) @ Jaguars(2-9)
Chiefs(7-4) @ Broncos(6-5) – I still believe the Broncos will keep this from being a Nationally televised game and yep……..that's my reasoning still and yes, even after Week 12
Chargers(6-5) @ Raiders(6-5) – intriguing if both can stay in playoff position
    Redskins(5-6) @ Giants(4-7)
Cowboys(7-4) @ Eagles(5-7) – getting closer to a Nationally televised game and more so after Week 12
    Packers(9-3) @ Lions(0-10-1)
    Bears(4-7) @ Vikings(5-6)
    Saints(5-6) @ Falcons(5-6) – likely not
    Panthers(5-7) @ Buccaneers(8-3) – not a chance anymore
    Seahawks(3-8) @ Cardinals(9-2)
49ers(6-5) @ Rams(7-4) – gaining quickly on a chance to be a Nationally televised game and is probably my best choice now

I currently have 1 game looking really good for the 3 Nationally televised games in Week 18 and then a bunch of who knows. We’ll see how that progresses.

    Any thoughts anyone?

Bye week for my Pack this week. Get that toe healthier Rodgers.

  5. Here’s the game map for this week’s games courtesy of 506 Sports. The 2 afternoon games that I have in LA suck. I’d rather have the other 2. Looks like a trip to Buffalo Wild Wings might be in order.

    https://506sports.com/

  6. Jeff:

Thanks. I’m surprised the Bears are enforcing the local blackout of the early CBS game, which I thought was done away with in the new TV deals. I’m guessing the Bears fear a lot of no-shows if there was an early game on CBS.

  7. Walt:

Gladly! And it’s definitely the 1st time that I have seen that enforced this season. I suspect that you’re right about what the Bears must be thinking. Very weird.

  8. Given what happened today:

With the Eagles and Football Team BOTH winning AND (as of when this was written) the 49ers losing to Seattle AND Vikings losing earlier to Detroit AND with the Saints in such bad shape they may not win another game all season, I’m wondering the NFL will reverse itself on Week 15 and flex out Saints-Bucs and replace it with Football Team-Eagles since the latter game could NOT be protected given it was under consideration for Saturday in Week 15. We know the Eagles will be 6-7 as they have their bye in Week 14 and the worst the Football Team can be is also 6-7, which given the state of the NFC could have them tied for the 6th AND 7th seeds going into Week 15 (not to mention if the Cowboys stumble as I think they may the NFC East even being in play). This also means Football Team-Cowboys is almost certainly safe for Week 16 as even if the Football team loses their next two, even at 6-8 they likely remain alive for a Wild Card at worst.

  9. BTW:

It appears CBS protected 49ers-Bengals and that was why it was not moved. as it was put with Bills-Bucs at 4:25 PM.

  10. After Minnesota’s embarrassing loss to the Lions, it is looking more likely that Vikings-Packers SNF in week 17 gets flexed. Cardinals-Cowboys or Rams-Ravens (which ever game Fox didn’t protect) will be flexed into SNF. Chiefs-Bengals, Broncos-Chargers, Raiders-Colts, Eagles-Washington, Panthers-Saints, and Dolphins-Titans are dark horses.

  11. John:

Would agree IF the Vikings continue to lose. Vikings are still at this point only ONE game out of the last wild card spot and with the right results next weekend could be tied for the 6 AND 7 seeds (one reason I could see the NFL flex out Brady and move Football Team-Eagles to SNF with Saints-Bucs becoming FOX’s main singleheader game).

As I see it as of now:

    Week 15: Football Team-Eagles replaces Saints-Bucs
    Week 16: Football Team-Cowboys stays
Week 17: Whichever of Cardinals-Cowboys or Rams-Ravens NOT protected by FOX.
Week 18: Cowboys-Eagles (I think the Eagles run the table and the Cowboys fall back to where it’s for the NFC East).

  12. Here’s my take on things so far. (Reposted from previous thread)

    Week 15

    # 1 – Packers(9-3) @ Ravens(8-4) <—I bet FOX has this protected
    # 2 – Titans(8-4) @ Steelers(6-5-1)
    # 3 – Bengals(7-4) @ Broncos(6-6)

Tentative – Saints(5-7) @ Buccaneers(9-3) – based on the NFL throwing out a revised Week 15 schedule, before Week 13, perhaps this stays? I sure hope not and after I post this I will look at nflcommunications.com and see if anything else has changed about Week 15.

    Week 16

    # 1 – Ravens(8-4) @ Bengals(7-5) <—huge game after Bengals smacked Ravens earlier this season in Baltimore
    # 2 – Bills(7-5) @ Patriots(9-4) <—huge rematch after the 1st matchup is this coming Monday, but if Bills lose in Tampa this coming Sunday, then it will have a 2 game spread, which won't help its chances
    # 3 – Redskins(6-6) @ Cowboys(8-4) <—the tentative and looks good to stay and if Washington beats Dallas at FedEx Field this coming Sunday, there's NO WAY this game moves…… 99.99999% chance to stay
    # 4 – Steelers(6-5-1) @ Chiefs(8-4) <—can't be flexed in as KC is out of SNF until Week 18 and I think that the NFL flexed Kansas City in too early with that game this past Sunday vs. Denver, but perhaps the Chiefs are protected the rest of the way ?
    # 3 – Broncos(6-6) @ Raiders(6-6) <—potentially pretty important and this week Denver hosts the Lions and the Raiders are in KC

Tentative – Redskins(6-6) @ Cowboys(8-4) – looks good to stay and if Washington beats Dallas at FedEx Field this coming Sunday, there's NO WAY this game moves…… 99.99999% chance to stay

    Week 17

    # 1 – Rams(8-4) @ Ravens (8-4) <— pretty big matchup, though the Rams could be done for their Division if they lose this coming Monday in Arizona
    # 2 – Chiefs(8-4) @ Bengals(7-5) <—might have been a fun matchup for SNF, but Chiefs are maxed out on SNF until Week 18
    # 3 – Cardinals(10-2) @ Cowboys(8-4) <—probably protected by FOX
    # 4 – Raiders(6-6) @ Colts(7-6) <—potentially intriguing and potentially a Colts destruction
    # 5 – Broncos(6-6) @ Chargers(7-5) <—Broncos have been a hard matchup for Herbert in his short career

Tentative – Vikings(5-7) @ Packers(9-3) – if Vikings don't just fall of the earth, this will stay. Vikings plays Steelers and Bears the next 2 weeks. This has to be decided by the end of Week 15.

    Jets(3-9) @ Bills(7-5)
    Patriots(9-4) @ Dolphins(6-7) – if the Dolphins keep winning ??????
Steelers(6-5-1) @ Ravens(8-4) – fading due to Steelers, but since the Ravens let the Steelers off the hook this past week and went for 2 and missed ???
    Bengals(7-5) @ Browns(6-6) – I don't know
    Titans(8-4) @ Texans(2-10)
    Colts(7-6) @ Jaguars(2-10)
Chiefs(8-4) @ Broncos(6-6) – I still believe the Broncos will keep this from being a Nationally televised game and yep……..that's my reasoning still and yes, especially after Week 13
Chargers(7-5) @ Raiders(6-6) – intriguing if both can stay in playoff position
    Redskins(6-6) @ Giants(4-8)
Cowboys(8-4) @ Eagles(6-7) – getting closer to a Nationally televised game and more so after Week 12 and after Week 13
    Packers(9-3) @ Lions(1-10-1)
    Bears(4-8) @ Vikings(5-7)
    Saints(5-7) @ Falcons(5-7)
    Panthers(5-7) @ Buccaneers(9-3)
    Seahawks(4-8) @ Cardinals(10-2)
49ers(6-6) @ Rams(8-4) – gaining quickly on a chance to be a Nationally televised game and is probably my best choice now

I currently have 3 to 4 games looking decent for the 3 Nationally televised games in Week 18 and then a bunch of who knows. We’ll see how that progresses. I'd hate to be the schedule maker for this Week 18. I think the NFL did themselves a bit of a disservice by adding the 2 Saturday games to the schedule, but I do know why they did.

    Any thoughts anyone?

Go Pack Go this week at Lambeau on SNF vs. the Bears. The team that Rodgers "owns and has always owned" according to his words at the end of their last matchup. 🙂

  13. Not a surprise:

What I think has been happening is local authorities have been telling the NFL they can’t have games moved to Sunday night because it would put a strain on available personnel, especially to work Monday morning if they have to work Sunday night because of a game being moved, largely due to vaccine mandates (there were many who felt the Bengals games in Week 13 against the Chargers and Week 14 against the 49ers should have been moved to Sunday Night).  Given how many in law enforcement in some areas have quit or otherwise were forced to go on leave because they refuse to get vaccinated, it likely has left many cities with a situation where they are shorthanded to begin with and can’t just deal with games being moved to Sunday night (from Sunday afternoon).

  14. I am posting this on Friday 12/10, after the Week 14 TNF game…

Week 15 is set, and no changes can be made.

Week 16, the only change I could see happening, is CBS swapping their 3:25pm game,
which is currently Steelers at Chiefs, with their best early game, Bills at Patriots.
Swap the two games with the early/late time slots. Either way, they have a solid doubleheader day on CBS.

Week 17, the Vikings won on 12/09, maybe that keeps the SNF game between Minn/GB.
But, FOX has a problem, they have a solid late game between Rams at Ravens,
and they have Cardinals at Cowboys in the early slot… based on the way TV works, the Cowboys following, and Arizona currently having the best record in the NFL as of the time I am writing this… Arz/Dal, has to be in a better time slot… will NFL and networks allow a game like that to be at an early time slot.

Week 18, very interesting, and still too early to predict, but…

2 ESPN/ABC games on Saturday 1/08 and SNF on 1/09
One or both AFC North games have to be considered for Saturday and/or SNF
Other games that as of the time I am posting this, Cowboys at Eagles,
whichever AFC West game has the most playoff implications, and 49ers at Rams could be a battle for a playoff spot.
